5 Tips to Keep Your Fitness on Track During the Holidays
The holiday season is a time for celebration, family gatherings, and delicious food, but it can also be a challenge for those trying to maintain a healthy fitness routine. Between holiday parties, travel, and the colder weather, it’s easy to fall off track. But with the right strategies, you can stay active and continue progressing toward your fitness goals, even in the midst of the holiday chaos.
Here are five actionable tips to keep your fitness on track during the holidays:
1. Set Realistic Goals for the Holiday Season
During the holidays, it’s important to adjust your fitness expectations. You might now be able to stick to your regular training schedule. So setting small, achievable goals will help you stay focused and on track. Consider goals like:
- Making a certain number of classes per week. It might not be as many as you normally do, so give yourself some grace.
- Prioritize getting 30 mins of movement per day. Whether it's at All Level during Open Gym or something you do at home (see below for some ideas!), some movement is better than none (remember, don't beat yourself up!)
- Get 8000-10 000 steps a day. Walking is one of the best ways to burn calories, so make it a point to try and get a few more during the holidays
By adjusting your goals to fit the season, you’re more likely to stay on track without feeling overwhelmed. Aiming for consistency, rather than perfection, can keep you motivated through the holiday hustle.
2. Incorporate Quick Workouts into Your Day
Time is often scarce during the holidays, especially when juggling shopping, cooking, and family events. One of the best ways to stay active is by having a few go-to workouts you can do anywhere. Need some ideas?? Check out this PDF we made just for occasions like this!.
These workouts can be done at home or in a hotel room if you're travelling, and they don’t require a lot of equipment or space.
3. Stay Active with Holiday Traditions
The holidays are a great opportunity to get creative with staying active while still having fun. Many traditional holiday activities can double as a workout, helping you stay fit without compromising your enjoyment. Here are some ideas to keep moving:
- Take a family walk after dinner: Instead of lounging on the couch after a big meal, take a stroll around the neighbourhood. It’s a great way to digest, get in some low-impact cardio AND to spend more time with family!
- Go ice skating or tobogganing: In a cold climate like ours, outdoor winter activities like ice skating or tobogganing (or even a walk through Bright Lights) can be an exciting way to burn calories.
- Organize a holiday fitness challenge with friends and family: Start a group where you perform a daily fitness challenge. It can be something like a daily step challenge, the most meters on any cardio machine (bike, row, ski, etc) or our monthly challenge for December at All Level--100 squats a day!!!
Incorporating these festive activities into your schedule ensures that you’re still getting movement in, while making the most of the holiday spirit.
4. Plan Your Meals and Snacks Ahead of Time
One of the biggest fitness challenges during the holidays is managing your nutrition. With so many tempting treats and meals at every turn, it’s easy to overeat or indulge in unhealthy snacks. By planning ahead, you can make smarter food choices that align with your fitness goals.
Here’s how to stay on track:
- Meal prep: Plan the meals you know you can control. When you are at a holiday party or event, we want you to eat the cake and have fun. But by controlling the other 80% of your meals, you can still stay on track.
- Limit holiday snacking: During the holidays there are snacks EVERYWHERE! Try and resist indulging at every opportunity. It's ok to say no to the candy cane they give you at the dentist (why?) or when you get a haircut! Save your snacks for the stuff you really like!
- Practice portion control: Enjoy your favorite holiday dishes in moderation. Rather than loading your plate, take smaller portions to avoid overeating.
By staying mindful of your meals and snacks, you can keep your nutrition in check without feeling deprived during the holidays.
5. Prioritize Rest and Recovery
The holiday season can be stressful, and between the extra activities and late-night parties, it’s easy to neglect recovery. However, rest is a key component of any fitness routine. It allows your muscles to recover, helps manage stress, and improves overall well-being.
Here’s how you can prioritize rest during the holidays:
- Get enough sleep: Aim for at least 7-9 hours of sleep per night to support your body’s recovery processes and maintain energy levels throughout the day.
- Practice relaxation techniques: Whether it’s through meditation, stretching, or simply taking a few moments to breathe deeply, stress management is important for both your mental and physical health.
- Take active rest days: Taking time to move on your days off from the gym can speed up recovery, help alleviate soreness and boost your mood! Not every day has to be a hard day, so make sure you are
Remember, taking time for recovery can actually enhance your performance and prevent burnout, especially when you're balancing fitness with holiday activities.
Conclusion
Staying on top of your fitness during the holidays doesn’t have to be a struggle. By setting realistic goals, fitting in quick workouts when you can't make it to the gym, staying active with fun holiday activities, planning your meals, and prioritizing rest, you can keep your fitness on track and even make progress during this busy season.
The key is balance: enjoy the festivities, stay active, and take care of your body so you can start the new year feeling strong and energized!
