All Leveler of the Month for June, Gill the Thrill!!

What got you started in CrossFit? How did you hear about it?

Mid-life crisis! Actually, I was seeing our box Chiropractor – Dr. Jaclyn Traverse and we started talking about our fitness activities, she mentioned Crossfit, till that point I thought it was just a Reebok clothing brand! She thought I’d like the workout and should check out All Level, I’ve been hooked ever since!

What is your favourite part about coming to the gym?

The great atmosphere at the gym is the first draw, the trainers are very friendly, enthusiastic and experts not only at Crossfit but understand the functioning of the human body pretty well. They understand the unique challenges a particular athlete faces and provide coaching accordingly to address those issues. This encourages newbies like me not to run away just looking at the WOD on the board. I must admit, as the workout time approaches all the aches and pains increase exponentially, once it starts up, everything settles down and one gets in the flow and also forgets the stresses of the day. All the athletes are very friendly and like to share their experiences and tips, which makes me look forward to go to the box. Despite being an active sportsman all my life, I could never stick to a typical gym for very long, but All Level has broken that record already.

What is your favourite CrossFit movement? Least favourite?

Overhead squats seem to be an odd choice, but I do look forward doing them the most, followed by handstands.
Least favourite is anything to do with front rack position – front squats, thrusters etc., I have mobility issues and just can’t get my elbows up.

What are your goals in CrossFit?

To get my front rack position going and knock out some front squats and second would be strict pull ups.

How do you explain your newfound obsession with CrossFit?

Obsessions are hard to explain, you have to experience it and get a feel for what it’s all about. Trying to explain it doesn’t do it justice.

What advice do you have for someone who is thinking of trying CrossFit?

If you can’t make it to All Level, find a box with good trainers and you will be surprised at what you can do. Go and feel the burn, if you like it, it will do you good. “We think too much and feel too little” – Charlie Chaplin.

What does CrossFit mean to you?

Apart from the physical benefits, it has given me the confidence of trying things are not in my comfort zone. The sense of achievement after finishing a WOD is pretty exhilarating and addictive. Also, coming to All Level and just talking and comparing notes with the trainers and other athletes is something I look forward to all day.

How has CrossFit helped you improve your life outside of the gym?

It has definitely helped me improve my squash game, but the feeling of being stronger physically just exudes into everything else one does. The biggest cheers are for the last person finishing and this just encourages one to keep persevering and chipping away at seeming impossible tasks, finally getting over the crossing line. This to me is the biggest attitude that spills over to life in general.
